Clothing donations, sadaqah and zakat

Giving clothing can be a charitable act, but that does not automatically mean its value settles a zakat liability. The donation's form, recipient and applicable religious approach need consideration. Generosity of intention is separate from the accounting or religious treatment of the transfer.

Practical checks: clothing donations, sadaqah and zakat

Before allocating a textile donation to zakat, ask both the organisation and a qualified religious adviser about the proposed arrangement. Islamic Relief's zakat policies describe its own collection and allocation framework. For an ordinary donation, establish what is accepted and how items will be used without assuming an unverified tax or religious equivalence.
