Muslim clothing glossary

Muslim clothing vocabulary combines garment shapes, uses and regional traditions. An abaya is an outer dress, whereas a khimar covers the head and extends over the upper body; a niqab covers the face. Qamis, thobe and jubba can describe related designs without guaranteeing identical measurements or construction.

Practical checks: muslim clothing glossary

Identify a piece through its photograph, pattern and measurements rather than its sales name alone. Examine openings, length, sleeves and included components. This glossary helps direct a search; it does not automatically confer religious approval on a garment because of its name.
